Lockhart - William McClaren

Word has been received here of the death of WC Lockhart at Waterloo, Indiana on Sat. The funeral occurred today. For many years Mr. Lockhart was in the saw mill and planing mill business in Crawfordsville, moving to Waterloo about 1883. He was 75 and for several years has been paralyzed. He was a cousin of Mrs. Cicero McCluer of this city.

The death of William C. Lockhart which occurred at the home, Fairfield Center last Friday evening, removes one of the well known pioneer citizens of the county. He had been a helpless invalid for nearly 3 years caused by a stroke of paralysis and he was a great care to his devotede wife during all these months in which he was bedfast. The deceased served as a member of Co A, 100th Regt Ind Inf and for years prior to his death he had not enjoyed good health on account of heart failure and other disabilities. He was a brother of RM Lockhart, who preceded him last April and father of Mrs. JC Day of this place and Robert Lockhart of Smithfield Township. The funeral took place at the home Monday and interment in Waterloo Cemetery.l Comrades of Post 52 GAR of which he was a member served as an escort and as pall bearers at the cemetery, and the ladies of WRC No 27 furnished a silk flag as a remembrance of his army service. He was about 77 years of age. The obituary will apper next week.

Once more the death Angel has entered our midst and called to his eternal home our esteemed brother and friend, Wm, C., Lockhart who was born May 27, 1884 at Lexington, Richland Co, Ohio. The deceased came to this state Dec 17, 1885 and otok up his residence near Waterloo. In 1862 he enlisted in the 100th Regt Ind Infantry Vols. His health failed in 1863 he was honorably discharged. On Dec 22, 1864 he was married to Elizabeth M. Spencer who died Oct 16, 1867. To this union was born on daughter, Mrs. Jennie L. Day of Waterloo. On May 6, 1869 he was again united in marriage to Mary E. Hickox who died of heart failure Feb 6, 1884. To this union was born one son Robert W, who resides in Smithfield Townshiip. On Oct 17, 1887 he was married to Elizabeth Ansley who watched over him and tenderly cared for him in his last illness. Only God can give the reward that she rightly deserves for her untiring devotion. Besides a wife and two children, the deceased leaves six grandchildren and a number of relatives and friends. We shall miss him, yet awhile our sorrow is deep we are content for Jesus knows best. Let his will not ours be done. We would not wish him back, but strive each day to walk with God, and follow humbly as we should, the way the Master trod. The funeral was held at the home Monday forenoon the pastor of the Corunna Church preaching the sermon and the burial took place in the Waterloo Cemetery where comrades of Post 52 GAR of which he was a member had charge, and members of the IOOF attended. - kbz
